Activities for Standards Dissemination
1.Mass Standards Dissemination
By using the kilogram prototype and precise balances, mass standards from 1mg to 5000kg are being established. Because the kilogram prototype is different from stainless steel standards in the volume and surface area, it is necessary for mass determination of stainless steel standards to correct the air buoyancy and the adsorption effect. For these corrections, we use the prototype balance (NRLM-U, relative standard uncertainty is about 3×10-10) and the sinkers which have the different volume and surface area each other. This original method was developed by NRLM in the late 1970's.
Now, three kinds of calibration are performed corresponding to the traceability system of Japan.
(1) Calibration of Secondary Standards specified in the Measurement Law
(2) Calibration of Weights from 50kg to 5000kg
(3) Inter-Laboratory Comparison
2.Force Standards Dissemination
Force standards less than about 500 kN (55tf) are established with dead weight force machines. Force standards bigger than 500 kN and less than 20 MN (about 2000 tf) are established with hydraulic force machines. On the basis of AIST regulations load cells of various ranges are calibrated and estimated. Now inter-laboratory comparison with using transfer load cells is going to be performed under NRLM technical guidance.
3.Pressure Standards Dissemination
On the basis of the primary pressure standard that is the interferometric standard mercury barometer, wide range and various modes pressure standards from 1 kPa to 2 GPa has been established with many standard dead weight piston gauges. Pressure standards less than 1 kPa are being developed by using results of the research performed at NRLM. Pressure standard piston gauges of various ranges and modes are calibrated in accordance with AIST regulations. Inter-laboratory comparisons using transfer gauges are performed under NRLM technical guidance.
