I2-stabilized Solid/Semiconductor Lasers for National Standards and Precision Length Measurement

  1. Purpose of Research
This project aims to establish length standards in APEC region by wavelength stabilized laser and to pervade them. Also, it aims to improve interferometric technology of wavelength standard and its calibration technique so that the length standard can be established by directly using international length stadard of laser wavelength.

  2. Research Institutes
Japan : National Research Laboratory of Metrology
    Partners
Malaysia : Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia
China : NIM, Shang-Hai Research Institute for Optics and Precise Mechanics, FuhTan University
    Korea : KRISS
Others : Some interchange opportunities to BIPM (France) , CSIRO (Australia) would be made in order to verify the compatibility to countries inside and outside APEC region.

  3. Share of Researches
    (1) Japan
Development of wavelength stabilized portable laser
Technology transfer of interferometric length measurement
    (2) Partners
Length standard establishment by laser interferometry
    Application to industrial measurements
Improvement of length measurement and standard

  4. Research Schedule in 1997FY
    (1) Japan
    Development of I2-stabilized portable laser
Prototype of wavelength stabilized laser diode
    (2) Partners
Development of an interferometer for line standard measurement (Malaysia)
Development of crystals for wavelength stabilized solid laser (China)
Development of wavelength stabilized semiconductor laser (Korea)

  5. Research Activities
@I2-stabilized He-Ne laser is an international de-facto standard of wavelength. The intercomparisons among advanced countries have been often performed. It is requested to pervade it. A portable I2-stabilized He-Ne laser will be completed in 1996FY.
