Coordinate Measuring System by Tracking Laser Interferometry

Publication

The standard and the calibration methods have not established yet for the coordinates system of a coordinates measuring machine(CMM) or the manufacturing machines. We have developed the coordinates measuring system constructing the laser tracking. Our purpose of research is to establish new coordinates standard and its calibration method. The tracking station consists of a laser interferometer which is set on a rotating table with fixed to a ball seat bearing at the cross point of the horizontal and vertical axes, as shown in Fig.4. The rotating table is always controlled so to aim a laser beam at the cat's eye as a target. The laser interferometer measures the change in the distance between the reference mirror and the target. @We use four tracking stations and find an initial value to minimize sum of square of residuals by means of the least square method. The error is only generated from distance measurements. The performance of the coordinate measuring system is given by tracking speed of 500mm/s, standard deviation of about 0.5ƒÊm and maximum the measuring space of 3.5m~1.7m~1.8m. The apparatus is also useful for the evaluation of a robot motion and measurements of a big construction.
